Hello!

I’m Marianne, and this is a project where I draw pictures of the things I’ve sewn, and reflect on the experience of making (and wearing) those things. Thank you for visiting!

Pattern: Sigma dress by Papercut Patterns
Fabric: Cotton (3% stretch) from Mood
Sewn Up: Spring 2022

Last April I attended Camp Workroom Social in the Catskills - a truly delightful experience! This spring version of camp is called "Wardrobe Week," so rather than taking a class, it was more of a sewing party / support group where everyone brought their own projects and worked on them side by side with the guidance of a wonderful teacher. (And otherwise got to be together with 60 other sewists in a beautiful setting, bask in the magical one-of-a-kind positive energy of head counselor Jen, and attend fun workshops like how to take better photos or make your clothes look more designer-y.)

My teacher was Carrie, who creates patterns for Cashmerette, and the main goal I had was to create some dresses I would be excited to wear. My past versions of this dress had significant neckline gaping, so Carrie helped me do a full bust adjustment to get a better fit. Now this block is my best-fitting one so far! Someday I would like to draft patterns from scratch so the process is less of a mystery, but for now I have been sewing from this base — I have made five versions of this in the year+ since I made this one! During camp I made two, which feel like friends with each other since they're both from the same substrate of slightly stretch cotton I picked up at Mood in LA.

Process shot of the two dresses I made at camp - both in the same slightly stretch cotton substrate.

I love this pale purple-pink fabric — I can't resist a print that sort of looks like something else but not quite. For me this conjures stones or sea life, but in colors and shapes you would never find in real life! The stretch made my first version a bit too loose, so this one is a slightly better fit. I love wearing this for a summer party or dinner out!

~ Photos by my Dad, who very kindly took photos of six lewks in a row last weekend on a steamy summer afternoon. It was so fun, and I was so grateful <3 ~
